True orthodontic emergencies may be rare, but a broken bracket, a loose wire, or a lost Invisalign® aligner can cause discomfort or disrupt your treatment. Our experienced team is ready to provide fast, compassionate care to relieve your discomfort and get your treatment back on track.
We have an on-call line that is available after our offices close, allowing patients to easily receive help over the phone. We encourage all patients to call us if they experience an issue with their treatment so we can determine the best course of action and schedule an appointment if needed.
Emergency orthodontic care is only provided to our current patients. If you’d like to join our orthodontic family, schedule your complimentary consultation today!
Some common problems that may occur during your braces or Invisalign treatment can be solved at home while you wait for an appointment.
If a bracket on your braces comes loose, don’t panic. It’s a common orthodontic issue that can be solved at home until your next appointment in most cases. If the bracket is still attached to the wire and not causing irritation, simply leave it in place and cover it with orthodontic wax to prevent discomfort.
However, if it’s dangling or poking your mouth, you can gently remove it using clean tweezers. Be sure to keep the bracket and bring it with you to your next visit so we can repair it.
If a wire from your braces starts to poke or irritate your cheeks or gums, it can be uncomfortable, but it’s usually easy to manage at home until we can see you. Try using a clean pencil eraser or cotton swab to gently press the wire flat against your tooth. Applying a small piece of orthodontic wax over the area can also help soothe the irritation.
If the wire is especially long or painful, you can carefully trim it with sterilized nail clippers. Then, give our office a call so we can schedule a quick repair and keep your treatment moving smoothly.
If you lose or damage your current Invisalign aligners, we may recommend that you move on to the next set in your series. If you do not have the next set, or if it does not fit, we may ask that you return to your previous set. It’s a good idea to keep your previous sets for this reason. Always call our office to ensure you’re taking the right course of action.
Retainers can also be misplaced or damaged, and they should be replaced promptly as they are an important part of your orthodontic treatment. If you need your retainer replaced or fixed, give us a call so we can help you keep your beautiful smile aligned.
Some soreness is completely normal when you first get your braces or after they’ve been adjusted! To stay comfortable, we recommend sticking with soft foods and rinsing your mouth with warm salt water to reduce inflammation. If needed, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers as directed by your physician.
Cold treats like ice cream or smoothies can also offer soothing relief (and be a little reward for your progress!). Discomfort usually fades within a few days, but if it lingers or worsens, don’t hesitate to reach out.
